Profile: John Meulemans

John Meulemans is Strategic Director at Urbanology, an interactive advertising agency in Haarlem with a focus on the social media. Urbanology helps brands navigate their way through the new media landscape and shows them how they can deploy the latest developments to create a competitive edge. The company’s customers include Reed Business, TUI, Red Cross, Discovery Networks, Sky Radio, AdLINK, O'Neill, Tommy Hilfiger and EMC2. Meulemans is also a co-founder of Netwerk023, a network of companies in Haarlem operating in media, advertising and the Internet.

About the company:
Urbanology is an online communication agency with a focus on the social media. We help our customers not only to reach their customers, but also to touch them: from broadcasting to interaction. In addition to the traditional media, we also make use of, for example, Hyves, YouTube and Google to generate conversations between people and brands.

Current project:
A youth campaign on Hyves for the Red Cross, an online community for a major kitchen manufacturer, and memberrecruitment for the 1% Club via search engines, and affiliate marketing.

Source of inspiration:
The monthly Wired magazine and my enormous RSS feed of different Blogs dealing with innovation, social media and marketing.

My big idea:
Currently: a social network with an online reservation system for flexi-jobs in companies and hospitality businesses that can be used on mobile telephones in combination with GPS. It would ease up on the traffic jams, make it easier to get to know more people, and it is totally ‘now’. But let’s talk about it again in a few months’ time ;-)

I think that would be www.techcrunch.com and for fun, www.geekologie.com

Hobby:
Buying records (from Beatport.com) and remixing them into sets every now and then, gadgets, sports, good food and drink, friends, and travel.

Best advice I ever received:
Enjoy life... it's short!

Biggest blunder:
I once made the mistake of not drawing up a solid business contract. It cost me a small fortune.

Tips for professional colleagues:
Learn from Obama and his way of communicating. Be a role model for brands and how they could embrace the social media.

As an ambassador of Amsterdam, I would...
Launch a platform that would make it easier for citizens (of the future) to access businesses and government.
