Profile: Ingeborg van Beek

As a child, Ingeborg van Beek wanted to become a flautist. Although that dream never came to fruition, she did manage to realize another dream: setting up her own company. She picked up her inspiration and experience in practice, both in the Netherlands and abroad. After a great deal of travel, Ingeborg finally ended up in Amsterdam, where she founded Shake the Tree in 2007. And as the name suggests, Shake The Tree is all about getting things going. She helps companies discover new options and opportunities, so that they will be able to ‘shake the fruit from the tree’ afterwards.

Company name:
Shake the Tree.

Company founding date:
September 2007.

Place of business:
Amsterdam.

Name of founder:
Ingeborg van Beek.

Founder’s age:
32 (Breda, 1976).

About the company:
In concrete terms, Shake the Tree offers the following:
- Strategic communication; or, consultancy in the field of (marketing) communication, specific communication to target groups, and the subsequent implementation of new plans;
- Public Relations; or, consultancy and support in the field of external business relations;
- Business development; or, the development of commercial policy with a view to establishing new market conditions and markets, and the subsequent implementation of the plans;
- Event development and event marketing; or, conceptualizing and organising small and big events.

Current project:
Publisher for ZAM Africa Magazine (see www.zam-magazine.nl), an editorial magazine about art, culture and politics in Africa. Also a number of loose projects, including the organisation of a festival (16 May in Amsterdam, details to follow) and the publicity for an unannounced project.

Source of inspiration:
People! From close friends to the milkman.... Observe and enjoy!

My big idea:
Shake the Tree, make this world a better place.

Favourite tools:
My iPhone: staying in touch with the rest of the world at all times and, at the same time being able to listen to my favourite music, a note book to write down all the ideas that pop up – mostly at night – and, finally, a whole range of lip glosses: my little pep-me-uppers for the occasional dull moment.

Favourite website:
www.vliegwinkel.nl - there’s still so much to do! Also www.enviu.org - proof that sustainable can also be fun.

Hobby:
Working (because, as Mahatma Ghandi once said: 'If you do what you enjoy most, you never need to work.'), and singing.

Best advice I ever received:
Be selective in your choices.

Biggest blunder:
Argh! Do I really need to share it with the rest of the world? Let’s just say there’s been a few big ones... it’s just one of the side effects of being on the go all the time. Sooner or later something’s got to give.

Tips for professional colleagues:
Live as if every day is you last. Learn as if you will live forever. And never lose your sense of perspective!

As an ambassador of Amsterdam, I would...
Put roadblocks on all the road connections to Amsterdam; otherwise Amsterdam is the best place in the world.
