Elisabeth Koch’s hats are not made for the wallflowers: spiders, engines, feathers, and tulle are used to the extreme. Her work can be seen in Vogue and Tattler, as well as at the hat event par excellence, the Royal Ascot. The designer is currently living in Beijing, but her customers can be found all over the world. Any ideas for Maxima?
Company name:
Elisabeth Koch Millinery.
Company founding date:
Augustus 2007.
Place of business:
Beijing, China.
Names of founders:
Elisabeth Koch.
Ages of founders:
30.
About the company:
Elisabeth Koch is a milliner that produces handmade hats. I never use mass factory production techniques. I produce tailor-made hats for customers who attend weddings, the Ascot, the Melbourne Cup and simply people who want to keep their heads warm on their bicycles. I also make eccentric hats that I enjoy making with, for example, crayfish, the Eiffel Tower or the phoenix.
Current project:
I’m currently working on a new fully 'wearable' collection made from 100% woollen felt.
Source of inspiration:
Mostly nature and culture, but I can find inspiration almost anywhere, and almost always in the most surprising places.
My big idea:
To design and produce high-quality handmade hats in a country where quality is not necessarily a given. I am very selective in my choice of materials and always know exactly where they come from. I also try to use natural products whenever possible. My hats are original and each hat is totally unique.
Favourite tools:
My hat press and a so-called 'pin pusher'.
Favourite website:
Obviously www.elisabethkoch.net
Hobby:
Looking for hat materials and objects I can put on the hats or make the hats from, travelling, flying, reading and meeting new people.
Best advice I ever received:
Assume failure is impossible.
Biggest blunder:
I once made a green hat in China. That’s an absolute no-no in this country! There is a well-known expression in China that, if you wear a green hat, your partner will have an affair!
Tips for professional colleagues:
The sky's the limit!
As an ambassador of Amsterdam, I would...
... wear a hat to match my outfit everywhere I go.
