The Paardenkathedraal is a professional, Utrecht-based theatre company that is managed by Dirk Tanghe (artistic) and Nanette Ris (commercial). Over the past few years, the Paardenkathedraal has developed into one of the most interesting theatre companies in the Netherlands with a unique and distinctive signature. The shows put up by Paardenkathedraal are sometimes unconventional and visually spectacular, but at other times also small-scale and intimate. Paardenkathedraal is theatre with the heartbeat of the moment: It is all about passionate, independent-minded shows with a clear, highly detailed performance style and form. The stories derive from the world repertoire and are stories that need to be told today to the people of today.
The Paardenkathedraal likes to travel and does so at least once every season with a large-scale production. To date, those productions have been performed in the bigger theatres in the Netherlands and Flanders. In addition, the company also does two other productions a year for its own theatre. The latter shows are smaller and more intimate. The company does approximately 150 shows a year that are attended by approximately 40,000 visitors.
The Paardenkathedraal is a theatre situated in Veeartsenijstraat in the Wittevrouwen district of the city of Utrecht. The building was formerly the stable of the veterinary college and subsequently the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University. The stable was designed by government architect C.H. Peters and was built at the beginning of the twentieth century. The name, Paardenkathedraal, was the popular name given to the building because of its characteristic front façade with its Neo-Gothic windows. The building has served as a theatre since 1993.
