Profile: Jeroen Elfferich

Jeroen Elfferich is the founder and CEO of Ex Machina. Ex Machina is an independent specialist in the field of social gaming for Web, mobile and broadcast platforms. Jeroen’s passion is the social context of technology and he views community gaming as the cutting edge of that field. Jeroen’s background is in artificial intelligence and sociology and, since 1996, he has set up a number of successful online and IT companies, including NetlinQ, which was sold to Framfab in 2000. He has been working on online gaming since 1998 and on a mobile multiplayer since 2001.

About the company:
Ex Machina develops technology for social games for a mix of Web, mobile and broadcast platforms. We operate in Europe, Japan, Korea and the USA.

Current project:
We are working on a number of big game platforms for (game) publishers and media companies. Our current killer app is multiplayer quizzes, but this mainly concerns implementations in which online games and social networks merge. I can’t reveal any more, as this could result in lawsuits, because the NDAs are kind of strict.

Source of inspiration:
‘the cloud’

My big idea:
Integrated multiplayer, synchronous online gaming between the Web, mobile and broadcast platforms.

Favourite tools:
My Happy Hacking Lite2 keyboard from Japan.

Favourite website:
www.google.com/reader

Hobby:
DJ work

Best advice I ever received:
Always look carefully before crossing the street.

Biggest blunder:
Wanting to be a parallel entrepreneur. I can only do one thing well at a time.

Tips for professional colleagues:
Never underestimate the impact of new technologies, but never overestimate the speed to market.

As an ambassador of Amsterdam, I would...
Try to stop the mutual competition between the cities in the Randstad. Try to convince them to face the outside world as a unified front...
